Obituary for Gerhard Spindler

Unexpectedly on Thursday, March 17, 2016 Gerry passed away at Concordia Hospital.

Born in Hamburg, Germany, Gerry emigrated to Canada in 1954 with his family. He is survived by his wife, Debbie, brother, Werner (Susan) and his children Craig (Angie), Victoria (Terry Dawydiuk) and Erik (Alana) nephew Peter, grandchildren Ryan (Megan Edwards), and Teagan, sisters- in-law Susan Wellard (David), Sally Tasker (Tom) brother- in -law David (Mathieu Jolicoeur) and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his friends Helmut and Eleanor Jaeger, whose constant support and understanding were precious to him.

Gerry’s entire working career was spent in the financial field-33 years with RBC and another 10 with Investors Group.

Gerry’s volunteer service included 21 years as Honorary Consul of Germany for which he was awarded the Bundesverdienst Kreuz (German Federal Service Cross), Secretary-Treasurer of the Consular Corps of Winnipeg, Scholarship Fund Director for The German Canadian Business and Professional Association of Manitoba, Treasurer of the Antique Motorcycle Club of Manitoba, Inc., Treasurer of Manitoba International Folk Dance Association, Treasurer of the German-Canadian Heritage Foundation, Treasurer of Prairie Performances (Manitoba) Inc., Member of the Manitoba Club, Chaine des Rotisseurs and Winnipeg West Rotary Club.

Gerry loved life in all its detail. He had an insatiable curiosity for how things are made and how they work. Together he and Debbie enjoyed extensive travel and many adventures while hiking, biking, cross country skiing, dancing and enjoying good food and wine.

He took great pride and pleasure in gatherings with his Stammtisch Bruder and will be dearly missed by those closest to him.

A memorial service will be held at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue on Thursday, March 24 at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Gerry’s name to the Salvation Army, 203-290 Vaughan Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3B 2N8 or to a charity of choice.

The family would like to thank Dr. P. Harris, Dr. P. Marzban and in particular Dr. L.M. Cummings for their compassionate and excellent care. Sincere thanks also to the Emergency and third floor medical staff at Concordia Hospital.

“Let not your heart be troubled…”
